For a rough check of a climate (accuracy in practice less than 10% RH): The color change is temperature-dependent. The cardboard strips are impregnated with various cobalt chloride solutions, therefore avoid direct metal contact.
Functionality
Moisture indicator strips provide a rough assessment of whether a critical level of humidity has been reached, for example, in a display case. The moisture indicators are composed of white, absorbent specialty paper that is impregnated with various Cobalt dibromide solutions. Depending on the relative humidity (rF) of the surrounding air, the paper adjusts its moisture content, consequently altering the color of the impregnated areas: shifting from blue to pink with increasing rF and from pink to blue with decreasing rF. The color change is reversible, meaning the moisture indicators can be used over an extended period if not damaged by dirt, chemical exposure, sunlight, or moisture.
